Facts about the Welsh language:

Wales is part of the United Kingdom and is a country that is full of history and culture. The country is certainly a very beautiful one that features high rolling hills and mountains and beautiful views of the sea. The Welsh language is also another language of beauty. Here is a small look at the Welsh language.

The Welsh language gets its orgins from the Celtic language. Welsh is mainly spoken in Wales but it can also be found throughout certain parts of England. The English are known to refer to the Welsh language as Cambrian or Cambric.

The earliest traces of Welsh can be found back as early as the 6th century. Historians believe that the modern Welsh language of today took several centuries to develop from that 6th century founding. Historians say that Welsh developed from the Common Brittonic Celtic language of the day and that the language would evolve from Early Welsh, Middle Welsh, to the more common Modern Welsh of today. It is believed that Modern Welsh got its beginnings around the 14th century.

While Welsh is still thought of as a minority language, legislation passed in the late 1990's in the country have made it possible to have Welsh and English on equal footing. It was the Proposed Welsh Language Measure of 2011 that gave Welsh its official language standing of today and provides a Welsh Language Commissioner, a Welsh Language Tribunal, and a Welsh Language Partnership Council to help protect the rights of the Welsh speaking people of Wales.
