Facts about the Norwegian language:

The Norwegian language originated in 700 as Norse, it is considered North Germanic. It is closely related to the English language which is also from Germanic origins. It is a tonal language. Norse was commonly spoken by the Viking community. The written language during its early years was the runic alphabet. It is the oldest of the written Germanic languages recorded. In 1030 Christianity reached Norway bring a new influence on their language. Latin words became part of the Norwegian vocabulary and Latin script inspired the written language. In the 19th century, the Danish released power over Norway causing them to become an independent country and that is when the Danish language began to split from Norwegian.

Modern Norwegian, or Norsk, is spoken primarily in Norway where there are approximately five million inhabitants and many different dialects. The Danish and Swedish languages are similar in that they have a dialect continuum which, put simply, means that these languages are interchangeable and understandable with Norwegian. Modern written Norweign is different than most languages. There are two written forms commonly used, the first is Bokmal, or "book tongue", and the second is Nynorsk meaning "new Norwegian". Additionally, there are two more forms of written Norwegian but they are considered unofficial and not commonly utilized. Norsk is a fascinating language often overlooked due to it only spoken primarily in one country, but it has a rich history and lyrical flow that make it stand out against others.
