The Swedish is a member of the East Scandinavian Group of Germanic proto-language. It belongs to the larger Indo-European language family. It is a prototype of the Old Norse in Scandinavia whose origin dates back to the Viking Era as an Old Swedish. It then evolved into the modern variety (Modern Swedish) used in the 19th century before finally becoming the Contemporary Swedish used today.
The Swedish language is almost becoming a continental language due to its use internationally and the high population that speaks it, 1 million. It is not only spoken in Sweden but also other countries like the US, Finland, Norway, Estonia, Canada and the United Emirates. However, not all the countries speak a similar variety of the language. As a result, the language has five dialects which include;
- Gotland dialects
- Finland Swedish dialects
- South Swedish dialects
- Norrland Dialects.
The structure of Swedish language has almost similar properties to the other family members of the Old Norse that is, Norwegian and Danish. However, it also has certain similarities to English and German languages to which they belong to the same prototype of the Indo-European family. The vocabulary of Swedish language is full of Germanic and some little English in the common usage. However, just like other languages, it borrowed a lot from Latin and Greek languages in its religious and scientific spheres. The language has 29 letters in its alphabet with a total of 38 sounds half of which are consonants and vowels. The sounds are structured in such a way that each one has its counterpart hence forming a pair for both consonants and vowels. The Swedish language has only two genders in nouns, common and neuter.
